Honduras Travel Tips

* Consular Travel Visa - You do not need a visa for stays under 90 days.  Your passport needs to be up-to-date.

* The official currency in Honduras is the Lempira (HNL). Check on the current exchange rate before traveling.  Foreign money can be exchanged in the banks.

* Water: In general, the water is safe; however it would be wise to drink only bottled mineral water. When you leave the large cities and go to smaller towns, be careful; for your own safety, we recommend that you only drink bottled water.  As in all countries, the hygiene and cleaning of food depends on the establishment you are in. In general, serious problems do not exist.

* It is not necessary to take any vaccines to visit this country, unless you plan to visit infected areas. Good hygiene is recommended to avoid catching malaria.

* In Honduras, the tip is not obligatory, however, if you were satisfied with the service, we recommend you offer a tip.

* An exit tax is charged on international flights.

* The official language is Spanish.  As in some Central American countries, other dialects are spoken as a result of the inter-racial mix of the population. However, the Negro Caribbean and English are also spoken especially in the Islands of the Bay.

* Catholicism is the official religion for approximately 94 % of the population.

* The electrical current is 110/220 volts at 60 Hz.

* It is recommended that you take light clothing, a jacket for the evening, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

* Regulations and requirements are subject to change without prior notice. It is wise to have a check-up with your doctor before you leave on your trip.

* Be on the alert for thieves who prey on unsuspecting tourists.  Do not go out alone at night, nor take unnecessary risks.

* Do not flash about valuable objects such as cameras, jewelry, etc. Carry them discretely in a bag if you need them.

* Leave large amounts of money, travelers' checks, credit cards, airline tickets, passports, etc. in the safe in your hotel, or carry them in a special travel pouch at your waist or chest.

* Always keep an eye on your bags and suitcases; hang onto your purse and your purchases in front of you.

* Be careful to not allow anyone to distract you as you enter or leave public transportation.

* In cafes and restaurants, never put your purse behind the chair, and never out of your reach.

* Make a photocopy of your passport and leave it in a separate, safe place.

* The best time to visit Honduras is between May and September when there are the traditional festivals in the country.
